Leave the World Behind has recently become fuel for discussions online, primarily fueled by its ending and unsettling themes. One particular scene featured a Spanish-speaking woman who spoke to Ethan Hawke’s character, yet there were no subtitles to translate what she was saying. So what exactly was it that she said?
Leave the World Behind Proves Controversial
Leave the World Behind can be classified as a pre-apocalyptic drama. It was recently added to Netflix and quickly captivated audiences. It is notable for how it shows societal collapse through the eyes of a married couple. The wife, Amanda, was played by Julia Roberts, and the husband, Clay, was portrayed by Ethan Hawke. The couple is also accompanied by their two children, Rosie and Archie.
The plot unfolds as the couple goes on a vacation and strange things start happening. These events include a ship crash, wild animals acting strangely, and mysterious visitors showing up. While this chaos is going on, Clay stumbles upon a distressed woman on the side of the road, who is speaking in Spanish. The language barrier is there for the character of Clay but it seems many viewers at home also didn’t understand.
The Spanish Was Eventually Translated
The lack of subtitles left viewers of Leave the World Behind struggling to understand the exchange and some speculated it was a deliberate choice that showed society’s reliance on technology. While Spanish-speaking viewers could understand the conversation, non-Spanish speakers were left in the dark. Fortunately, a translation has emerged. The first time the woman speaks, she requests help from Clay by saying, “Please! Sir! I need help, please! Please, sir!”
The next time when she talks to Clay, she explains her situation, detailing her attempt to return home. She also explains that she saw some unsettling things, including a plane emitting red gas and a large group of deer. Even though she is giving Clay valuable information, he chooses to drive off and abandon her.
